How it works
Do the thing. Earn the sticker.
No guides, no group tours, no schedule but the calendar. Everyone starts together in January and runs the same twelve months, so the whole cohort is chasing the same challenge at the same time, all the way around the calendar.
Do the month's challenge
Soak in a hot springs, stand on a summit, float a river, sleep a night out under the stars. Every month is specific enough to matter and flexible enough to make your own.
Send proof, collect rewards
Upload a geotagged photo or email it in. That month's sticker lands in your mailbox, milestone boxes drop at your 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th challenge, and finishing all twelve puts your year up for the Colorado Twelve Award.

The calendar
The Colorado Twelve
Twelve challenges built around Colorado's seasons and spread across its corners. Each challenge belongs to its month — you ski in January and float a river in May — and the whole cohort moves through them together, from the first snow of the year to the last mountain town in December.

Ski, ride, or sled a mountain
Lift ticket or saucer sled, snow counts either way. Zero gear barrier.

Twenty thousand sandhill cranes drop into the San Luis Valley and the prairie chickens start dancing out on the plains. Colorado Parks and Wildlife lists viewing sites in every corner of the state.

Tent, camper, or the back of the truck. Dispersed on national forest or a reserved site: a night out is a night out. June gets you out before the monsoon rolls in. Book early, the good ones go months ahead.

Any segment of the 567 miles between Denver and Durango. Wildflowers are still going at altitude, and an early start beats the afternoon monsoon.

Stargaze under a dark sky
Colorado has more certified Dark Sky Places than almost any state, and the state's Stargazing Trail maps them. Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon, Dinosaur, Westcliffe. September is the clearest, steadiest sky of the year, and full dark comes early enough to be home by ten.

Chase the gold while it lasts. Kebler Pass, the Peak to Peak, Owl Creek, the San Juan Skyway, or ride up into it on a scenic train or a resort gondola. Terrible name, best two weeks of the year.

The wildlife series
Wildlife keeps its own calendar
March is the wildlife month, but Colorado's best animal watching is scattered across the year and none of it waits for us. Each of these is its own sticker. Collect the set and you have followed the seasons around the whole state.

The Colorado Twelve Award
Finish all twelve and your year is judged as a whole — twelve photographs, one state, one story. The strongest year wins, and the winner picks the prize: a whole season on the mountain, a new bike under you, or two thousand dollars toward whatever gets you outside next. Not a raffle. You earn it.

Submit your proof
One rule, every month: a geotagged photo. No receipts, no ticket stubs, no paperwork. Take the picture where you are and you're done. Then tag it #CO12 and show everybody.

Drop your photo here. We read the location and the date it was taken straight out of the file, and check whether anything has been altered since.
